What Film School Can’t Teach You

In partnership with UCI Illuminations, Auctus Productions hosted a sold out event at the Paul Merage School of Business. The event consisted of several short documentary screenings followed by insightful discussions about film production, starting a business, the inspiration behind each film, and the lessons that the entrepreneurs of Auctus learned along the way.

The film screening and discussion was followed by a lively Q&A with the audience. Afterwards, there was a reception in which attendees, most of which were students, were able to meet and chat with the members of Auctus Productions.

The following are the four films that were screened along with the key takeaways that were discussed:

Jack Harrison | Road to City

Though it was Auctus’ first major filmmaking experience, they learned that with confidence and effort, you appear more credible than you are. They stressed the importance of preparation and how ultimately, their limited portfolio at the time did not hold them back from having conversations with large companies.

Nations United | A World Cup Story

The members shared their intriguing stories and memories from the 2018 World Cup in Russia and how they seized every opportunity presented to them. With no script and all improvised, they captured moments in this historic event, which led to the creation of a documentary that tells the story of human connection.

Punch | The Story of Adelino Da Costa

The struggles of creating a documentary were shared along with the lessons they learned during the process. Auctus realized that capturing a good story requires an investment of time and patience to create the best final product.

Inspired | The Story of NIMANY

A film in a completely different genre than Auctus’ previous documentaries, this was the premiere of their first film in the arts. In a film that took over 2 years to make because of a mid-way change in direction, Auctus realized that sometimes, you have to take a step back and look in with a new perspective to effectively reach the goal.
